Turkish Folk Love Song Uskudar - $10
This rhythmic piece features a catch ostinato that children will enjoy playing. This piece is suited for beginner band and classroom arrangments. Second clarinet does not go over the Bb. This piece is set in Uskudar, a suburb in Istanbul and is about a young clerk who comes out of his office to find it is raining. Puting up his umbrella he spots a young lady who has dropped her hanky. When he picks it up to return it to her, he has hidden a Turkish delight inside it ....and so the romance begins.

This medley is based on 2 love songs. The first haunting melody is about the iconic black eagle which flies over the Dnipro river and is slow and memorable. The second melody is fun, fast and lovely rhythms the children will enjoy. The second melody is about a comic piece about a young lady telling a man she does not want his attentions as he is short and stocky and she has her eye on the tall handsome man over there. This is suitable for primary school bands or beginner high school bands, or classroom arrangments. Second clarinet does not go over the Bb. Yiddish (Eastern European Jewish) Folk Song: Tumbalalaikai

This translates as play the balalaika (triangular guitar) with joy. It is a love song which depicts a young man finding a suitable wife and he wants more than a pretty face. He asks a number of riddles, but the girl outsmarts him and they join in the chorus singing Tumbalalaika together. It is a delightful tune which features 3/4 time and very simple crotchet (quarter note) melodies. Second clarinet does not go over the Bb. Many instrument lines are doubled so you do not need all instruments. Arranged for percussion, piano, flutes, sax, clarinet, trumpet, violin, guitar and bass.

South African Folk Ipharadisi

This piece translates roughly as being: Where our ancestors have gone - may we go also. It features traditional harmonies and opportunities for improvisation. The melody is very catchy and children will be able to play this easily once they learn it orally. The second clarinet part does not go above Bb. I have arranged it for flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet, violin, piano but many of the lines are doubled so you can use less lines if needed.

Chinese Wagon Driver's Tune - $10
This folk tune uses the pentatonic scale D, F, G A, C and traditional heterophonic sound. It is suited to an intermediate younger school band and has some easy lines which can be handled by beginners. Arranged for flutes, clarinets (2nd clarinet does not go over Bb), sax, trumpet, guitar tab, bass, piano and percussion. A flute sample is shown here.

Zimbabwe - Mai Nozipo (Mother Nozipo) - $10
This traditional Zimbabwe tune uses traditional harmonies and syncopation. It is suited to beginner younger school band and has some easy lines which can be handled by beginners as each melodic idea is only 4 bars long and is very repetitive. It has 4 lines for bass, harmony, melody and conter melody. Arranged for flutes, clarinets (2nd clarinet does not go over Bb), sax, tenor sax, guitar tab, bass, piano and percussion. A clarinet sample is shown here. Clarint 1 line can be played by brass instrument eg. cornet/trumpet.

'The Piano' - Theme Music from the Movie - The Heart Asks Pleasure First - $15
This hauntingly beautiful piece is often out of reach for younger players but this arrangement separates the melodic, harmonic and bass lines to make it playable by younger or less experienced players. This piece is based on 3 melodic ideas and is in compound time changing from 12/8 to 9/8 to 6/8. The rhythms are harder but are a great way to teach playing in compoud time. The first 2 melodic ideas are easier than the third, so a strong soloist would be able to carry this if it was attempted by a more beginner band. This is suitable for upper primary school bands or beginner high school bands, or classroom arrangments. Second clarinet does not go over the Bb break. Many instrument lines are doubled so you do not need all instruments. Arranged for piano, flutes, sax, clarinet, trumpet, violin, guitar and bass. A second clarinet part is included here.
